The Mountain Horse breed actually hails from the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. The basic characteristics of this breed are of a medium-sized horse (14.2 - 16 hh ) of gentle temperament and with an easy ambling four beat gait, and it is rugged enough to tolerate the winters with a minimum of shelter. The breed is known for gentleness, it is a easy keeper and a wonderful riding horse with a strong heart and endurance. Today the Mountain Horse is being used as a pleasure horse, for trail, and for competitive or endurance riding. As a show horse the breed is rapidly gaining in popularity because of it's beauty and unique way of moving. The calm temperament of this horse makes it ideally suited for 4-H projects and working cattle.
